The games have begun! The 2015 Canadian Little League Championship games got underway today, and were complimented by the Opening Ceremonies. White Rock All-Stars took on NDG Lynx, Lethbridge Red Giants faced High Park Braves, and Host East Nepean Eagles took on Glace Bay Colonels.

The day kicked off with a ceremonial first pitch by the Ottawa Senators own Kyle Turris. Turris, who is from BC, watched some of the game as well.

The White Rock All-Stars set the pace for the tournament with a 14-0 win. White Rock pitchers #32 Alen Sugimoto and #6 Darius Opdam Bak had the tournaments first, and only so far, no-hitter. #15 Matthew Wilkinson went 3 for 3 at bat and #7 Kole Turner had 4 RBIs. The game was called short under mercy rules after 4 innings.

The afternoon game had The Red Giants versus the Braves. With a strong performance from the Braves, they came out on top 8-0 for the second shutout of the day. #27 Ty Wevers had the only hit for Alberta, up against tough throws from Braves pitcher #48 Maximilian Zentil who threw 9 strike outs. #25 David Gucciardi and #10 Samuel Dumper had home runs for the Braves.

The day ended with the Eagles defeating the Colonels 16-0. This was the third shutout of the day, and the second mercy rule ending after the top of the 4th inning. #9 Michael Stremlaw, #15 Ben Anderson and # 13 Ben Adams all hit Home Runs for the Eagles.

The big event of the day was the Opening Ceremonies, featuring the Band of the Ceremonial Guard, the Ottawa Aboriginal Coalition saying a few words and a presentation and Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson and MPP Hon Bob Chiarelli each saying a few encouraging words. Michael O’Byrne, who was a coach for the 2004 World Series East Nepean Eagles, helped out as an emcee and stuck around to watch the game.

Tomorrow will see the Colonels play the Braves at 12 pm, the Red Giants take on Moose Jaw (playing their first game of the tournament) at 3 pm and the 6 pm game will have the Eagles battle White Rock. The NDG Lynx will have their rest day.
